Stories In Music: A Young Person's Concert

Sunday, February 7, 2010 • 1 pm

Tubby the Tuba sets off on a venture to find a song of his own. William Tell must shoot an arrow through an apple on his son’s head in order to save them from a wicked emperor. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice tries to overpower a magic broom. And in Peter and the Wolf, an ingenious boy enlists the help of an animal friend to overcome a wolf in the forest. These enduring fables of adventure, mystery and magic—told in words and music—form the program of this entertaining event for both children and adults. The concert introduces children to classical music and instruments, captivates young adults with the excitement of musical possibilities, and beguiles all ages with some of the world’s finest, most beloved musical stories. Conducted by Max Culpepper, the virtuosic yet fun-loving Connecticut River Valley Orchestra performs these renowned classics with four different narrators. Listeners from 5 years old to 85 (and up!) will have the thrill of hearing world-famous symphony music and some of the timeless stories of the western world. That these compositions have been reinvented over the years into children’s books, animated films and motion pictures, while still retaining their concert-hall status, is a testament to their universal and enduring appeal.
