A Rhine Journey: The Music of Germany From Bach to Wagner

with introductions by Stephen Langley

Sunday, May 15, 4 pm

Claremont Opera House

In its grand finale concert of the season, the Connecticut River Valley Orchestra showcases some of Germany’s—and the world’s—greatest classical music, from the Baroque period to the Romantic. The full-symphony concert opens with Meyerbeer’s stirring and noble Coronation March from his enormously successful opera The Prophet. The program continues with movements from Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 and Haydn’s Symphony No. 94 “Surprise Symphony;” as well as Brahms’ exciting and best-known piece, Academic Festival Overture. Following an intermission, the CRVO performs Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture; Mozart’s Serenade No. 10, K. 361 “Gran Partita;” and the third movement of Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5 “Reformation Symphony.” The concert concludes with Siegfried's Rhine Journey from Wagner’s dramatic Twilight of the Gods—the last in his four-opera series The Ring of the Nibelung—an epic musical saga based on German mythology. Join the CRVO for this fabulous journey through Germany and the classical composers whose work has endured for centuries.
